Talk: Queer perspectives in natural history films
Gay humpback whales, lesbian seagulls and shark threesomes?
This talk explores how queerness has always existed in the natural world and how the stories we tell about nature are shaped by who is doing the looking.
Award-winning filmmakers and cinematographers Angel Morris and Christina Karliczek Skoglund each bring in distinct life stories, field work experiences and their creative approaches. Through personal insight and professional practice, they consider how queer ways of seeing can expand representation on screen and deepen our understanding of nature as diverse, complex, and profoundly non-binary.
Focusing on marine species, the first part of the talk highlights scientifically documented examples of same-sex behavior, fluid sexuality, and non-monogamous social structures in animals ranging from mammals to invertebrates. The second part turns the lens back on filmmaking itself. How does an LGBTQIA+ perspective influence what is noticed, framed, narrated, or left out in natural history storytelling?
Christina Karliczek Skoglund is a Gothenburg-based cinematographer and professional diver mostly working in natural history film. Some of her cinematography featuring sharks in cold waters can currently be seen at The Maritime Museum in the exhibition Sharks, Camera, Action!.
Angel Morris is a nonbinary producer and award-winning editor specializing in natural history and archival storytelling. They are best known for directing and editing the Oscar-qualified short documentary Love Birds in collaboration with NBC News Studios.
