About the museum

The Maritime Museum and Aquarium explores life under, on and above the surface of the water. We bring you closer to maritime culture as well as its varied forms of life from the historical and scientific perspectives. The Museum and Aquarium has undergone an extensive renovation and extension and is now finally open.

Organisation

The Maritime Museum and Aquarium is part of the museum sector – one of the three sectors in the City of Gothenburg cultural administration. The museum itself has three units: the aquarium, collections/building and public activities. We have around 27 employees in total.

Exhibitions and programmes

Our exhibitions explore the relationship between man and the sea over the ages. We also have a wide range of activities as well as our exhibitions, such as talks, children’s activities, city tours and boat trips. We have something here for all ages and most of the activities are included in the annual pass for the museum. At the moment the museum is closed for renovation.

Collections and archives

The museum’s collection is a dynamic and expanding resource. The emphasis is on maritime history, with many model ships and designs. We continuously add more objects to our public database.

Our vision

The Maritime Museum and Aquarium is a unique combination — we create the unexpected!

Our Mission

The Maritime Museum and Aquarium illustrates Swedish maritime cultural history, and promotes the idea of a living sea. We believe in lifelong learning and want to make people reflect on and question issues. Together with the world at large, we want to create enjoyable activities that challenge our visitors.
